I know from experience that about now, you might be feeling a bit frustrated with the curriculum choices you've made. You have finally been able to confess that your homeschool curriculum choices aren't working.
I've purchased that math... or spelling... or science book that just didn't quite work out for our kids. I remember changing the math curriculum that we had used for years because I didn't think I could continue teaching the higher math levels. It left my daughter more confused.
I ended up siting next to her for an hour everyday and both of us tried to figure out how to do each days lesson.
I had spent money on something that wasn't working and I was taking more time to make it work than I planned. My hope was that it would be less time consuming for me not more!
So...we scrapped it about 8 weeks into the school year and went back to our original math curriculum. It didn't matter that I spent so much on that curriculum, it wasn't worth the tears and frustration!
Maybe you felt like to you did your due diligence. You scoured the internet. Read all reviews. Asked for recommendations. You took the plunge and order it. It was going to be the perfect homeschool curriculum.
Then reality set in. Your kids don’t enjoy it as much as you thought they would. It wasn't what you dreamed it would be.
What can you do?
When your homeschool curriculum isn’t working, it’s not the end of the world. Here are six things you can do to overcome this homeschool hurdle.
Try using it differently- If it comes with a lesson plan, alter it or make up your own. Take away what doesn't work. Add a resource here an there to fill in the gaps that you find.
Ask for help- There are many homeschool parents that would love to help. I would love to help!
Check your homeschool routine- Maybe you are doing that subject at the wrong time of day. They may need it when they are the most alert. Try after doing it after lunch when they are more relaxed or mid morning when they are more awake. All our children are different and are the most alert at different times of the day.
Take a break- Sometimes just stepping away from it from a few days, a week is all you need.
Sell it or return it- Check the return policy. If they do not have one, sell it and....
Try something new- It is never a bad choice to try something new when you have tried everything to make the curriculum work and it doesn't.
Yellow House Book Rental is here to help I am here, to help. You have options.
If you have curriculum that you want to sell, shoot me an email and let me know what it is. We may want to buy it from you.
Homeschooling is a journey. Some times we take the wrong turn or get side tracked. That's okay. When you realize this, find your way back and keep going.
