 National Backward Day, January 31st

Did you know that reading the sentences in a paragraph backward is a nearly foolproof way to spot fragments? Take a paragraph and read the last sentence. Then read the next to last sentence. Continue until you get to the first sentence of the paragraph. (Note this is reading entire sentences in reverse order not reading words in reverse order. If reading words in reverse order, it will be gibberish.) Find more proofreading and editing tips at WriteShop.com

In her article, Why self-editing is hard for kids … and how to make it easierKim explains some parent frustrations and her tips to help.

I hear it all the time.

"We’re having self-editing issues. For some reason, my children believe they are perfect writers! They can never find any spelling or grammar mistakes."

Surprise, surprise! Most children simply don’t get the whole editing thing. They like what they wrote and can’t understand why you want them to—gasp!---look ways to improve it.

Yet every seasoned writer will tell you that the editing stage is as important— if  not more so—than the writing stage, for this is where the writing is refined and honed to become the best piece possible."

I’ve been in this place with my children many times. They like what they wrote and don't want to change it, yet even though I know that what they are trying to say and the idea may be correct, it still needs refining.  And the battle begins! Have you been there? Kim has excellent tips on how to how moms can encourage our children’s writing efforts.

WriteShop is my absolute favorite writing curriculum. It is also a great co-op class. All my children have done wonderfully with it and have gone on to be excellent writers in high school and college writing. I believe WriteShop's writing foundations were the key.
