Lessons Learned From a Bowl of Oatmeal

Posted by Michelle Osborn on

Welcome to Yellow House Book Rental! We are primarily a homeschool curriculum, rental service.
However, we offer a variety of services. You can compare each one, at Yellow House Book Rental, and decide which is best for your family.

A couple of mornings ago, my oldest daughter brought to my desk this beautiful and yummy bowl of oatmeal.  As I sat savoring the mouth-watering mixture of flavors, I thought back to all the breakfast I made for her and her brother and sisters. A flood of memories came back to me of being surrounded by four little ones.... always... 24/7! This was a "harvest" that I was receiving!

The beautiful results of mothering do not come as quickly as we hope. The reality is that we will never see all the results to want to, but there will be wonderfully sweet, yummy, breathtaking, proud moments that you will experience. Don't' lose heart!

"Do not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time you will reap a harvest because you did not give up." (Gal 6:9)

...by the way, there were more times than I care to admit that I felt like giving up.

Motherhood is a HARD and wonderful thing. It is waking up morning after morning and loving your kids even when you wonder if you are doing any good, if anyone will ever notice.

YES, YOU ARE!

I believe that we have the most important job in the world. Who else has privilege, given by God Himself, the awesome experience of raising, nurturing, teaching, disciplining, molding, praying for, loving, cuddling, and kissing your children each and EVERY day?

Homeschooling has given me the incredible blessing of being with my children every day, all day, and the tremendous responsibility of teaching my children. But they are teaching me too! I am continually learning so many new things about life, what's important, taking time to enjoy the little things, loving unconditionally, and a bigger glimpse into how much the Lord loves me, His child. I couldn't imagine it any other way.

YOU are shaping children who will become adults and shape the future.

Your love and hard work will go on. You are creating a legacy.

YOU are important!

They grow up so very fast! Savor the moments!

(the following added 4/26/20)

All four of my children are now grown. Three married and two with two children each. 27 years of mothering! They were the hardest best years I can remember. Teething to teen rebellion. What an adventure.

I know often sit in a quiet home and miss those loud crazy, difficult, incredibly blessed years. Mama, please cherish every moment because they will be gone in a blink of an eye!

Do not give up in doing good because you will reap a harvest!

Keep up the good work mama! You will see many results along the way, just be patient! Keep your eyes open to see those results, even in the little things, like a beautiful, yummy bowl of oatmeal!

  • I know that these little years will be gone before I realize what happened, but I always appreciate the encouragement to stop and savor it because I often find myself wishing away my hours and days. Thanks for the reminder to stay faithful and joyful in the sowing so that we may one day too reap the harvest!

  • Amanda,
It always amazes me that God can use me and my difficult circumstances to bless other. Teenagers are challenging. They can be your best friend one minute and then turn to someone you don’t even recognize the next. God continues to teach me through my very strong willed child. Sadly, aren’t we like that with Him as well? Don’t give up in doing good. You WILL reap a harvest when you do not give up.

  • I just wanted to say thank you for this article. I am a relatively new homeschooler. And I am being really challenged right now with my 13 year old. This article really encouraged me today. Thanks! God bless!
